Digital Communications 2

The internet has always been said to connect the world. Even though this is the case I believe that Social media had a bigger impact in this part of “Connecting the world”. With so many different social media networks you can truly connect with anyone in the world. According to our online slideshows Social networks were first considered to be a true SNS when they were able to offer to make a profile, communicating with others, and viewing an entire network. From here the SNS world imploded with many different types of Social Network systems. Social media networks have evolved so much connecting us with the world through miniblogs, pictures, and videos. Social media networks now have a great impact on our everyday lives. One of the biggest contributors is influencers (people we look up too with a big social media platform). Advertisers use influencers on social media along with advertisements and social media pages to promote their products and services. Social media platforms have helped the advertisement game immensely. Most people know a day have at least one social media. If it be linked in or snapchat advertisements are there. We are so connected to our social media networks sometimes it’s hard to ignore an advertisement especially if they play in the middle of a video you are watching or being used from your favorite influencer. According to the article, I read The effect of social media communication on consumer perceptions of brands we also are helping companies advertise their own products, for example, Coca Cola’s Internet users who declare their preference for brands like Coca-Cola on its Facebook profile (e.g. ‘I love Coca-Cola’ or ‘Coca-Cola is the best!’). We post pictures drinking Cokes and others see these post we put online creating our own free advertisement for the Coca-Cola company. Social media networks have become something incredible from keeping people in touch and getting to know your community to a whole advertising mine where people make so much money just by having a social media platform.

  1. You are correct in this assessment, social media and advertising are joined at the hip. While social media companies might brand themselves as bringing people together, this is simply a means to an end. The more effective the SNS is at continued engagement, the more eyeballs it can use to view advertisements. This is a necessary evil in my opinion, without advertisements the social media business model would be completely untenable.

  2. Hi Yovani,

Social media influencers do play a big part in shaping our decisions making. Ten years ago, the biggest media influence we had were the celebrities. Now, everyone on Instagram with over 5,000 followers could potentially be an influencer. It's crazy how the media world has changed.

Keep up with your great works!

  3. I also did my blog on social networking; it is a very impactful tool that we use on a daily. I believe that the beauty of social media is what you said, “you can truly connect with anyone in the world”. Social networking is what helps keep up to date with popular culture, our friends, and families. – Tija Hawkins

  4. Hello! You are so right about advertisements in social media. Social Media became a gold mine for the advertising industry. Many social media influencers make thousands of dollars just by posting a product. Advertisement firms don’t even need to find consumers, they just need to go to the influencer with the highest amount of followers who will accept a check. Great Work! –Vedika Khanna

  5. Hello!
I think that you are completely right. Advertising plays a huge role in Social networking sites. You see it on every type of social media. YouTubers also use their platforms for advertising. I watch a lot of beauty influencers on YouTube. One of the girls that I watch said that she was getting a lot of hate from the people that watched her because they thought that she was using her platform to make more money off of her sponsorships instead of giving accurate reviews. To help this she made banners that showed when she was talking about things that she payed for with her own money, PR, sponsorships, etc. I think advertisements in social media are important but you should also we weary of whether they are given with the best interest at heart. Great Job on your post!
